Start with what our weather actually does
North Central Washington is a hard climate on roofing, and it is hard in four separate ways. Long, intense summer sun. Wind that funnels through the valley and comes off open ground and open water. Winter snow that stacks and sits, especially on flatter pitches and at higher elevations. And freeze-thaw, which is the one that quietly does the most damage.
Sun ages asphalt from the day it goes on. Ultraviolet exposure and heat drive the volatile oils out of the shingle mat, the mat stiffens, and the granule layer that protects it starts washing off into the gutters. On a south or west-facing plane with a hot, poorly ventilated attic underneath, you can see curling and granule loss years before anybody expected it. Metal does not degrade this way. Its coating fades slowly over decades, but the panel itself is not being consumed by the sun.
Wind is where installation quality outweighs material choice, though not entirely. Shingles depend on a heat-activated adhesive strip to bond each course to the one below. That bond weakens with age and with thermal cycling. Once a tab lifts, wind gets underneath and the failure spreads. Standing seam panels are locked to each other and held by concealed clips fastened into the deck, so there is no adhesive to age out.
Snow load and shedding split the two clearly. Metal is slick, so snow slides off once the surface warms even slightly. That reduces sustained weight on the structure and shortens the melt-refreeze window. Shingles are rough by design, so snow sits. Sitting snow melts from the bottom, runs to a cold eave, and refreezes, which is how ice dams form and how water gets pushed backward under the covering.
Freeze-thaw is the destroyer of details on both systems. Every day through winter, water melts, moves, and refreezes, and each cycle widens whatever gap it found. On shingles it splits sealant, lifts tabs, and opens nail penetrations. On metal it tests the flashing work and the fastener washers. This is why we spend more time on flashing, valleys, eave protection, and ventilation than on which product goes on top.
Lifespan, honestly stated
Architectural asphalt shingles carry long numbers on the wrapper. In this valley, on an exposed plane with average ventilation, plan on meaningfully less than the printed figure. Shaded, well-ventilated north slopes do better. South and west faces do worse. That spread is normal and it is driven by sun and attic heat, not by the brand.
A properly installed standing seam metal roof commonly outlasts two shingle roofs on the same house. The panels are not the limiting factor; the sealants, the penetration boots, and the flashing details are, and those are serviceable items rather than reasons to replace the roof.
The practical question is how long you plan to own the house. If you are staying, metal usually ends the replacement cycle for you. If you are a few years from selling, a quality shingle roof can be exactly the right call, and we will say so.
Maintenance differences
Shingle roofs want debris kept out of the valleys, moss kept off the shaded slopes, and the flashing and pipe boots checked periodically. Boots are the most common single failure we find on shingle roofs in this area: the rubber collar dries, cracks, and leaks long before the field of the roof is worn out.
Metal roofs want the fastener and sealant lines checked on exposed fastener systems, the valleys and behind-chimney areas cleared, and the penetration details looked at. Standing seam has no exposed fasteners in the field, which removes an entire category of maintenance, but the flashings still need eyes on them.
Either way, a scheduled maintenance visit is the difference between fixing a sealant joint and rebuilding a section of decking. Debris holds moisture, moisture finds the split, and the split becomes rot. Nothing about that process announces itself from the ground.
Appearance and what suits which house
Metal has moved a long way from the ag-building look. Standing seam gives you clean vertical lines and a long color range, and profile choice changes the character of the roof considerably. It fits modern hillside builds, rural properties, cabins, and plenty of traditional homes too.
Shingles still look right on a lot of established neighborhood streets, and dimensional products carry real shadow lines and depth. On a cut-up roof with multiple dormers and short runs, shingles can also be the more sensible choice because standing seam wants long, clean runs to look its best.
Our rough guide: long simple planes, heavy snow exposure, open wind exposure, or a long ownership horizon all point toward metal. Complex cut-up geometry, a neighborhood look you want to keep, or a shorter ownership window point toward shingles. Both need the same thing to succeed, which is correct flashing, correct ventilation, and a crew that does not rush the details.

We get on the roof. We check the decking condition, the attic ventilation, the existing flashing work, the valleys, and how many layers are up there. We photograph all of it and show you.
